A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DICKIE /DICKY / DICKEY &
OTHER ASSORTED SPELLINGS.
Definition:
(1) Webster defines the Dickies,
(spelled 3 ways) as a detachable shirtfront and collar worn by
women under a jacket or low cut blouse. Dickies are available
with Turtleneck or Mock Turtleneck, or Crewneck
Collars.
(2) A detachable shirt front for a
man, worn with Turtleneck, Mock Turtleneck, Shirt, Tuxedo,
Crew neck collars, and collars of many
descriptions.
Dickies were very popular in
the 1800's when laundry was manual and laborious.
Gentlemen wore the shirtfront made of celluloid: it was
smooth, impervious to stains and dropped or spilled
liquids. It was worn on the outside of the shirt so the
shirt remained clean and was ready to wear another day, the
Dickie (with a shirt collar) was merely wiped clean, rolled up
and ready to wear again. The most common version of the
Dickie had a collar that served as an anchor to hold every
thing in place and the front rolled down to be held there by a
belt or buttoned down. The Dickie adapted with the times and
today is worn under a shirt, coat or
sweater.
Women adapted them to use for
modesty and for the same lack of laundry facilities. The
1930's saw a tremendous gain in popularity and as styles
constantly do, the popularity ebbed and flowed. No one knows
for sure when the Dickies moved from a shirt protector worn
outside to where it is today, worn under the outer
garment. Turtleneck Collars were popular with Sailors
and others who worked outdoor, while the Mock Turtleneck was
better suited to the women and social events. The
Turtleneck and the Mock Turtleneck are very much in style when
worn by a man under a sport coat or blazer. Turtlenecks
outdoors, mock Turtlenecks for indoor
events.
Gaining and loosing favor
throughout the years... The needs for the Dickies changed, and
so did the configuration and material. Not always a
necessity, but rather an addition to supplement, to enhance
appearance and comfort.
Comfort is primary importance,
the fabric used in our "Charades" Dickies today is a soft,
supple 50/50 poly cotton and ring spun for even more comfort,
when worn under a sweater it will snug up around the neck to
provide even greater comfort. The Dickies can provide a
color next to the face that is most flattering to the wearer
without the bulk of an additional shirt. Appearance is
enhanced because the Dickies allows the sweater, or blouse to
flow freely while the Dickies fits sung, providing comfort and
beauty.
No matter how you spell it
Dickies, Dickey, Dicky, or Dicke, the benefits are most
pleasing to your appearance and enhance your wardrobe.
The Dickie, very modest in cost can be worn with a shirt,
without a shirt under a jacket, a sweater, and sweatshirt or
under a blazer. Change the Dickies, from Peter Pan
collar Dickies to a Turtleneck or a mock Turtleneck Dickie,
change colors and your total appearance is improved with a
very low cost. Your wardrobe multiplies with the
availability of a selection of Dickies of various collars...an
assortment of Turtleneck, Mock Turtleneck, Peter Pan Collars,
banded collars and Crewneck Collars in your closet will expand
your wardrobe for each style and color...
Mock Turtleneck, Turtleneck,
Crew Neck, Mock Turtleneck with a Flair, Mock Turtleneck
without a Flair, Mock Turtleneck with embroidery, a white Mock
Turtleneck goes with everything, a Red Mock Turtleneck, or a
green Turtleneck is appropriate at the holiday seasons,
The Police and Fire Departments favor the Black or Navy Mock
Turtleneck embroidered. Turtleneck Dickies are the
favorites in the colder states as well as the Mock
Turtlenecks... Many Nurses choose the Crew (Scurb) Neck
Dickies for warmth and comfort... Hospitals maintain a
relative low ambient temperature and also Scrubs are somewhat
revealing. Dickies, Mock Turtleneck or Crew Necks are the
logical choice, no bulk no binding, just quit subtle comfort
and good looks.
